Presenting the much anticipated garnishfood retro canapés!

Mum and I took a trip down memory lane today and found a few kitschy serving items in the archives of my childhood home. We present to you these timeless treats!

Devils on horseback (wrap pitted prunes in bacon and cook in 180c oven for 15-20 minutes)

Salmon toasties & cocktail stick garnish (for cocktail stick garnish: cut cheddar cheese into squares, add cocktail onion, cabanossi round and pineapple piece. Poke completed cocktail sticks into a halved orange as seen in image)

Asparagus rolls (cut crusts off bread and spread with potato salad dressing, place 2 canned asparagus spears onto each piece of bread, sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste and roll up, spiking bread with toothpick to keep it in place)

Cream cheese celery sticks (mix cream cheese with French onion soup powder to taste and apply to celery sticks)

Devilled eggs (boil eggs, peel, cut in half, remove cooked yolk and place in a bowl with potato salad dressing and curry powder to taste – ratio of about 1/4 teaspoon curry powder and 1 teaspoon of potato salad dressing to 3 egg yolks, combine ingredients then place the yolk mixture into egg whites, sprinkle with chopped parsley)

The Feast

These canapés turned into a bit of a lunchtime banquet. It was rather a sensory delight with the colour and flavours proving to outdo themselves. I know food has evolved over time but these retro classics were so delish! They were reasonably healthy as well! I’d like to give a shout out to parsley which when served in context makes a fabulous garnish.

Thanks for your help Mum, hope you and Dad enjoyed the afternoon. I certainly did!

A lovely trip down memory lane… Retro canapé mission accomplished!
